Living Snow Fence Pilot Project

Now welcoming three sites in Ottawa! 

Join our pilot program to improve road safety and support environmental sustainability.


About the Program:

  • Receive $700/acre/year for the designated area.
  • No cost for site visits, establishment, and refill and tending for five years.
  • RVCA staff will handle all planning, planting and upkeep.
  • Choose from three windbreak designs tailored to your site.

Requirements:

  • Property must be along the City of Ottawa’s right of way.
  • Must be an open/fallow field.
  • Location should help prevent road drifting, with priority given to sites perpendicular to prevailing winds.
  • Living snow fence must be setback into the field for maximum effectiveness.
  • Commitment to keep the living snow fence for at least 10 years.

Our generously subsidized program offers fully customized tree planting services for private landowners in the Rideau Valley and Mississippi watersheds.

What’s involved?

01

Site Visit

Request a site visit between June and October. Forestry staff will visit your property to ensure eligibility, discuss your vision and assess planting potential for the following spring.

Custom tree planting plan

Staff will work with you to develop a unique plan for your property, including recommendations for the best native species for your property’s growing conditions and maintenance of access points and other areas of concern.

Site preparation

In the fall ahead of planting, staff will prepare the site as required, including mowing the area and marking planting lines. In spring staff may also plant cover crops.

Tree planting and tending

In spring, we’ll deliver and plant your trees, returning in the fall for a survival assessment and tending as required.

Survival Assessments

Forestry staff will visit your property after 1, 3 and 5 years to assess the health of the new trees and refill areas that did not survive.

To qualify

Owners must:

  • Have a minimum of 0.25 Ha (0.62 acres) of suitable land
  • Order a minimum of 500 trees
  • Agree to reasonably protect the trees from damage

Landowners must:

  • Have a minimum of 0.5 Ha (1.25 acre) of suitable land

  • Order a minimum of 1,000 trees

  • Agree to reasonably protect the trees from damage
