Annual Compliance for Alternative Treatment Units

Some properties require or choose to install an alternative treatment unit (ATU). These systems are different than conventional septic systems and can more effectively treat private sewage on small lots, in areas with high groundwater tables or other factors. Because of their advanced design, these systems are required under the Ontaio Building Code to receive annual maintenance by a qualified and licensed contractor to ensure they continue to operate properly.

The Septic Approvals Office sends annual maintenance reminders to property owners with ATUs. Once completed, property owners are responsible for notifying our office by sending a copy of the inspection invoice. Some service providers may do this on behalf of property owners.

Some septic systems because of their advanced design, require annual maintenance by a qualified and licensed contractor to ensure they continue to operate properly and treat wastewater effectively. Under Ontario’s Building Code, the following septic systems require an annual maintenance agreement:
