“Minor” Low Water Condition in Rideau River Watershed
July 10, 2018 – This statement is to advise that present conditions in the Rideau River watershed are now at the threshold for Minor Low Water status under the Ontario Low Water Response Program. Rainfall in the last 90 days, measured at climate stations in and around the watershed, is about 80% of the normal amount for the time of year which is the threshold for Minor Low Water. May 15, 2018 – By this statement the Flood Warning issued on April 30 for Bobs and Christie Lakes is terminated. The water level on Bobs Lake has receded to the ‘Full Supply’ threshold. No significant rain is presently forecast for the next four days. Therefore, levels on both Bobs and Christie Lakes can be expected to continue to recede toward normal summer levels over the rest of the week. Rain forecast for Saturday and Sunday is not expected to be enough to raise levels again. Caution is still needed around lakes and rivers with water still cold and above…

Bobs and Christie Lake Levels Still High
May 4, 2018 – This message is an update to the RVCA flood warning of April 30. A weather forecast from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry has the possibility of generalized rain up to 25 millimetres (mm). An additional 25 mm could fall in localized storm cells. If the rain occurs as forecast, water levels can be expected to rise again throughout the watershed. However, no flooding is expected in the lower reaches of the system downstream of Smiths Falls. Bobs and Christie Lakes Stay High
May 7, 2018 – The Flood Warning issued on April 30 for Bobs and Christie Lakes remains in effect. Levels on both lakes have declined slightly but both remain above the ‘Full Supply’ threshold at which damage can occur. This decline will continue for the next two days with no precipitation forecast. However, rain is forecast for Thursday and through next weekend with a possible five day total close to 55 millimetres. May 10, 2018 – The Flood Warning issued on April 30 for Bobs and Christie Lakes remains in effect. Levels on both lakes continue to decline at the rate of about one centimetre per day. However, levels are still above the ‘Full Supply’ threshold at which damage can occur. Rain today is not expected to be sufficient to affect the decline of the lake levels and no rain is forecast for the next five days. Time to Take Root — Dollars Available to Plant Trees
Money is available to landowners interested in planting trees. The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority offers private landowners tree planting programs that help them get technical advice, planting plans and funding for trees. “We have numerous community-minded partners providing funding to projects to help reduce landowner costs,” says Scott Danford, RVCA Forestry Program Manager. “We offer planting programs that make it easy and affordable for landowners.”

RVCA Celebrates 50 Years of Conservation
The Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) Board of Directors formally acknowledged the 50 year anniversary of the Conservation Authority’s formation at their meeting last night. “We are delighted to celebrate 50 years of conservation,” announced RVCA Chair Lyle Pederson as he unveiled the Authority’s special 50-year logo. “This will be a year to share our successes and how they have made a significant contribution to the health and prosperity of our watershed.”

Brewer Park Project Wins Prestigious National Conservation Award
Brewer Park Pond Restoration Project has received the Top Canadian Fishing Industry Conservation Project Award for 2015. This award, presented at the Spring Fishing and Boat Show at the International Centre in Mississauga, ON is determined by a vote of the members of the Canadian Angling Hall of Fame. For Muskies Canada (Ottawa Chapter) and the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA), this is the second year in a row where one of their partnership projects has received recognition. In 2014, the partners were recognized for work to create nursery and feeding habitat for fish along the Jock River in Richmond.

Ottawa Hazard Mapping Public Open Houses
Members of the public are invited to an upcoming open house to review hazard maps. The RVCA has just completed a review and update of existing hazard maps (floodplain and steep slopes) along the Rideau River from Hogs Back to Rideau Falls. These maps are typically known as “floodplain mapping,” but they also show areas that are prone to natural hazards such as flooding, erosion and unstable slopes and natural environment features such as wetlands. Live 88.5 Carbon Neutral Forest Grows
Canada’s first and only carbon neutral radio station continues in its efforts to plant trees and maintain its efforts to offset carbon emissions. Ottawa’s LiVE 88.5 FM will see another 5,700 trees planted in the southern Ottawa area to offset the carbon dioxide produced annually at their Ottawa broadcast centre. This brings their total to 39,900 trees planted since they decided to go carbon neutral in 2011. As part of the continuing commitment to support the community and improve its already environmentally friendly operations, Carleton Refrigeration, Heating and Air Conditioning Inc. will be planting 1,302 young, vigorous, native-Canadian trees in Ottawa. The company is the newest participant in Rideau Valley Conservation Foundation’s (RVCF) Carbon Neutral Program. Identifying hazard lands is an important responsibility for Ontario’s Conservation Authorities. During the last five years, the Rideau Valley Conservation Authority (RVCA) has been conducting several hazard mapping studies on watercourses within the City of Ottawa and the RVCA area of jurisdiction. For some watercourses, old mapping will be updated; and for others, hazards maps will be created for the first time.
