Lake Links Workshop

Since 2002, the Lake Links Workshop has been an annual opportunity for representatives of lake associations and other volunteer stewardship groups in Eastern Ontario to come together with government and non-government agencies to listen to speakers, share information, and address common lake and river issues that matter most to Eastern Ontario communities.  The workshop has become an important networking opportunity for these groups and has fostered excellent partnerships, communication and collaboration with regional government and non-government organizations.

Organization of this event has been shared with a number of regional partner groups over the past years including the Bobs and Crow Lakes Association, Cataraqui Region Conservation, Centre for Sustainable Watersheds, Community Stewardship Council of Lanark County, Christie Lake Association, Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Associations, Friends of the Tay Watershed, Frontenac County Stewardship Council, Lake Networking Group, Leeds County Stewardship Council, Mississippi Valley Conservation, Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources (Kemptville District), Otter Lake Association, Otty Lake Association, Parks Canada, and Rideau Valley Conservation Authority.

The Planning Committee is grateful to the Ontario Trillium Foundation, the Federation of Ontario Cottagers’ Associations and to French Planning Inc. for their continued generous support of this important networking event.

Lake Links 2009

More and more challenges are facing Ontario’s lakes due to increased development and greater use.  It is vital that we understand our impacts on the health of our lakes and learn how to monitor and reduce those impacts.   The theme of the 8th Annual Lake Links Workshop, held on Saturday October 24 at the Perth Legion Hall, was ‘Measuring and Monitoring’.  With 100 participants in attendance, the event had over 20 stewardship exhibits and interactive displays featuring information about species at risk, invasive species, lake planning, water quality measuring, fisheries and groundwater.   This year’s workshop agenda, the presentations offered by our regional experts in lake environmental protection and monitoring, and other resources from the day are listed below

The 7th Annual Lake Links Workshop was held October 25th at the Perth Lions Hall at the Perth Fairgrounds. Over 75 participants from various lake groups throughout the region learned about the affects of artificial lighting on aquatic systems and explored the Lakeshore Capacity Assessment tool that can be used to determine how much shoreline development is appropriate for a lake.   Participants also had a chance for some ‘hands on’ learning about Eastern Ontario’s Species at Risk and tried their hand identifying water bugs (benthic invertebrates) and running the groundwater simulator demonstration.
